Suzuki Motor Corporation suspends GP racing

Suzuki Motor Corporation has decided to suspend temporarily its participation in FIM Road Racing Grand Prix MotoGP from 2012.

This suspension is to cope with tough circumstances mainly caused by the prolonged recession in developed countries, an historical appreciation of Japanese Yen and repeated natural disasters.

Having an eye to returning to MotoGP in 2014, Suzuki will now focus on developing a competitive new racing machine for that class.

Suzuki will continue motocross racing activity and support of road racing activities using mass-produced motorcycles, by obtaining FIM homologation and co-operation with the supplier of its development racing kit parts.

Spies completes important M1 work

Rider Ben Spies spent the sessions working through two differing engine specifications and a number of frame and geometry settings on the 2012 1000cc YZR-M1. The data will now go back to Japan with the Yamaha engineers who will work on the next stage of development ahead of the first 2012 test in Malaysia at the end of January. Despite missing the valuable input of team mate Jorge Lorenzo, all the required testing was completed within the two days.

At the conclusion of the test Spies was third in the timesheet with a best lap time of 1’32.338 after completing 57 laps.

Ben Spies:
“It’s been a long two days. We had a lot of work to do with Jorge not being here but we’ve got through everything. I think we got the guys working in the right direction, we’re still quite a way from Qatar and what we’ll be racing with but we’ve got a good idea of what we need to work on. There’s a lot of potential in what we have so they’ll go back to Japan now to work on it for a couple of months and we’ll see what we have as a package next year. The team and engineers have worked really hard for the last couple of days so a big thank you to them.”

Massimo Meregalli, Team Director:
“It’s been a really good test. We got a lot of data, everything we were missing in the previous tests from cancellations and injuries etc. The work that we’ve done is good, the schedule is completed and we are quite satisfied. There is of course still some work to do but I think it’s been positive. Now they’ll check the data in Japan and we’ll see the next step in January. Ben did a really good job; I’ve never seen him so focused in a test. It’s the best way to start the new season.”

Rossi and Ducati ready to evaluate following Test

Just as was the case yesterday, the second and final day of Valencia’s post-race MotoGP test was blessed with ideal weather conditions.

Valentino Rossi was among the first riders to get on his bike after the track was opened, and he worked tirelessly with his team and Filippo Preziosi to carry out the tests requested by the engineers, who will continue working on the 2012 project tomorrow in Bologna.

Once again, official test rider Franco Battaini substituted for Nicky Hayden, who has an injured scaphoid in his right wrist, though the American stayed at the track and followed the test from the Ducati Team garage. Hayden will likely undergo a small operation in the coming days to speed up his recovery.

MotoGP concludes its 2011 season of racing and testing, and will return to action with the first winter test, planned in Sepang, Malaysia, from January 31st to February 2nd.

Valentino Rossi:
“These were two important days of testing because we needed to collect a lot of data for the next few months of work, which will be crucial. The positives of this bike are certainly the engine, which I like, and the fact that it handles a bit better than the previous one. It’s definitely more fun, in part because you can get sideways more. The frame isn’t bad, but it needs work. We have to improve the braking, because I need to brake harder and later, and we need to improve traction under acceleration. Filippo has many ideas, and now we have a little time to apply them before next year’s tests.”

Filippo Preziosi, Technical Director:
“We were lucky to have sun and generally much better conditions than what we had over the race weekend, and this allowed us to take full advantage of both test days. Unfortunately, Nicky wasn’t able to ride, but at least he’ll have plenty of time to recover before the first test at Sepang next year. We asked Valentino, Franco (Battaini) and the other Ducati riders to carry out a series of comparisons between different solutions, as there are still chassis parameters that we have to define for the project we’re working on. It has been really hard work, but we’ve collected a lot of information that we’ll now use for the design that we’ll be doing in the coming weeks.

Emotional funeral service bids farewell to Marco Simoncelli

Thousands of mourners came together for the funeral of Marco Simoncelli held at the Santa Maria Assunta church in Coriano on Thursday, October 27th.

A huge gathering of fans, friends, family members and prominent figures from the world of sport attended the funeral service for the MotoGP rider who passed away on Sunday. The funeral was held at 3pm on Thursday at the Santa Maria Assunta church in Coriano, Simoncelli’s hometown, close to Riccione in the Italian province of Rimini.

The casket arrived at the Assunta church carried by friends and members of the Gresini team, and at 3pm the service commenced. Simoncelli’s Gilera bike, on which he won the 2008 250cc World Championship title, and the Honda RC212V, on which he competed in the MotoGP class were displayed on either side of his casket.

The ceremony was broadcast on a large video screen outside of the church, as well as on an additional large screen installed at the nearby Misano circuit, so that those outside of the church and at the circuit could witness the ceremony. Prior to the service the screens ran footage of the 24 year-old at his charismatic best in the paddock.
Alongside Marco’s father Paolo, mother Rosella, sister Martina and girlfriend Kate, in attendance were current and former fellow riders including Valentino Rossi, Giacomo Agostini, Alex Criville, Simone Corsi, Yuki Takahashi, Raffaele de Rosa, Chaz Davies, Mattia Pasini, Manuel Poggiali, Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso, Randy de Puniet, Loris Capirossi, Toni Elias, Hiroshi Aoyama and Alex de Angelis.
Also present at the services were FIM president Vito Ippolito and CEO of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, who commented on the services.
“What I experienced this afternoon in Coriano was very moving. After seeing the turnout of citizens, fans and the whole paddock there is no doubt that a great rider and a brilliant person has left us. The outpouring of affection that has been shown demonstrates that he has left his mark.”
“I was impressed by the courage of Marco’s family, and especially the strength of his father, Paolo, who was able to transmit his strength and energy to others.”
“It has been extraordinary to see the MotoGP family come together for Marco Simoncelli. Despite the unfortunate loss, the tribute makes clear the immense affection that people had for him. We will never forget Marco.”

MARCO SIMONCELLI has died after a horror crash at the Malaysian MotoGP in Sepang.

The race was cancelled when Gresini Honda rider Simoncelli fell on the second lap and was hit by Colin Edwards and then Valentino Rossi as he slid across the track.

Simoncelli's helmet was knocked off and he was immediately rushed to the on-site medical centre for treatment.

On Sunday 23rd October, during the MotoGP race at the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit, San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Italian rider Marco Simoncelli suffered a serious accident wherein he sustained critical injuries.

The race was stopped immediately with the red flag and Simoncelli was transported by ambulance to the circuit medical centre where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him.
Despite their efforts, Marco sadly succumbed to his injuries at 4:56pm local time.
Everyone involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Marco’s family, friends and team at this tragic loss.

Ducati Team continue work on GP11.1 in Malaysia

After a difficult weekend in Phillip Island, the Ducati Team has arrived in Sepang, eager to continue work on the GP11.1 for the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

The Ducati Team left Australia on Monday, and after a 24 hour break, the team is ready to get back to work on the GP11.1 for the Malaysian GP. Sepang is one of the widest tracks on the calendar, reaching a width of 16 metres in parts and the asphalt temperature is often very high due to the tropical climate. The layout is varied, with a little of everything: two spots where riders reach sixth gear, but others that are technical and taken in first.

Since its MotoGP debut, the Ducati Team has achieved three wins and one podium at Sepang. Valentino Rossi, who counts the track among his favourites, has six wins and three podiums, while Nicky Hayden has never finished in the top three but has always been very consistent, with five fourth-place finishes in his career, along with one fifth and a sixth.

“I like the Sepang circuit a lot, although the weather conditions are always extreme. We didn’t have much good luck in Australia, and we also had to work harder than expected on the bike’s setup. We hope to do better here in Malaysia starting on Friday. Anyway, we’ll also be able to verify where we are compared to the tests that we did here last year, it will be interesting to compare things now, with what we had then.”

“The conditions in Malaysia are typically hot and steamy, very different from what we had at Phillip Island on Sunday. The Sepang circuit has a good mix of everything, so you need the bike to do everything well. There are some long straightaways where you need a fast bike that brakes well, along with some fast corners, like Turns 5 and 6 and a section in the back. On the other hand, there are also some slow little hairpins, so it’s a good mix of everything that really challenges a rider and bike. It will be interesting to get back on this track after spending a lot of time here in February. The bike has changed a lot, so we’ll see what kind of progress we’ve actually made.”

Lorenzo’s surgery a success

Following successful plastic surgery in Australia, Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo has now flown home to Barcelona for a period of recovery.

As already confirmed, the Mallorcan rider will miss this weekend’s Grand Prix of Malaysia. A decision on his participation in the final race of the season at Valencia will be made within the next two weeks dependent on the progress of his recovery.
“Casey has had an incredible season with very few mistakes,” commented Lorenzo. “He has always been very strong and consistent so it has been very difficult to beat him. Congratulations to him, he has been the best this year and deserves his second title, a huge achievement as it comes with a different manufacturer. I would have liked to have fought until the end, maybe until Valencia but the accident on Sunday made it impossible. I am very proud of my team for all the hard work they have put in to take second place in the championship. Now we have to think about next year and work as hard as possible to win again. After the crash I was very worried that I would not have full feeling in my finger again, after the excellent treatment I received, I have been assured that I will have complete feeling in my nerves and tendons. This gives me good confidence; I can’t wait to get back on my M1 again!”

Yamaha Factory Racing riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies will not ride in today’s Grand Prix of Australia following separate on track incidents by both.

Reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has been forced to withdraw from Sunday’s Iveco Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix after sustaining a left hand injury in Sunday morning warm-up at the Phillip Island circuit.

The Yamaha rider crashed at the exit of Turn 12 on his final lap of the 20-minute session, high-siding off the bike and coming to rest on the edge of the circuit.

The Spaniard walked away shaking his left hand, and was declared unfit for the race after a visit to the medical centre following the session.

Lorenzo trails world championship leader Casey Stoner by 40 points with three races remaining, meaning the Australian only needs to finish in the top six in the 27-lap race to secure his second world title. Stoner has topped every on-track session this weekend at the Island, and has won in Australia for the past four years.

Lorenzo’s team mate Spies received a hit to the head yesterday during the qualifying session after a high speed crash. After attempting to ride some laps in this morning’s warm up, the rider reached an agreement with team members that with reduced concentration attempting the race would be considered too dangerous for himself and other competitors.

Valentino Rossi’s crash in the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday aggravated an old injury in his left hand, team mate Hayden will take his place in testing the GP12.

Although the initial examination suggested otherwise, Rossi’s first lap crash produced a hairline fracture at the site of an injury from a fall at Assen in 1995. The severity of the pain and swelling in the little finger of his left hand has ruled out the Italian’s participation in testing the Ducati Desmosedici GP12, therefore Nicky Hayden will take his place in Thursday’s test of the machine at Jerez.

This will be the last of an extra eight days the team has been allowed to test the 2012 machine, the next testing for Ducati will be at the Official Test following the Valencia GP.

Stoner dominates FP3 in Japan

Casey Stoner led the Repsol Honda trio to the top three spots in the third MotoGP practice session at the Grand Prix of Japan.

Casey Stoner posted the fastest lap of the weekend thus far on his third lap in the Saturday morning practice at Motegi, then went on to better that provisional pole setting time with a 1’46.162 despite running off the track shortly beforehand. The Australian’s best time was six-tenths quicker than the leading lap of team mate Dani Pedrosa that put the Spaniard in the top slot on Friday. An impressive penultimate lap by Andrea Dovizioso ranked the Italian second, 0.139s behind Stoner and 0.128s ahead of Pedrosa.

The fourth Factory Honda of Marco Simoncelli ranked fourth in the outing, the Italian taking his San Carlo Honda Gresini machine around to post a best time of 1’46.592, ahead of the Yamaha Factory Racing duo of Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies, both of whom managed to keep within a second of Stoner’s time. The last man to ride within that one second mark however, was Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi, whose time of 1’47.161 was an improvement of eight-tenths on his previous day’s time to put him seventh in the field.

Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) made significant progress to post the eighth quickest time, ahead of Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) and Randy de Puniet (Pramac Racing) who completed the top ten.

Wild card entry Shinichi Ito (Honda Racing Team) crashed while entering turn 3, the Japanese rider was unhurt though the incident hindered his progress and left him the only rider in the field that was not able to improve upon his previous day’s time.

The MotoGP paddock arrives in Japan this week for round 15 of the 2011 World Championship at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit

Reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo now has just four races left to close the gap to Championship leader Casey Stoner, currently 44 points ahead. Lorenzo is no stranger to the Motegi podium having taken victory in 2009. He narrowly missed out on a 2010 podium after a fierce battle with then team mate Valentino Rossi, ultimately finishing in fourth.

Ben Spies arrives in Motegi for his second ever MotoGP race in Japan. Last year saw the Texan deliver a master class in overtaking having lost several places after running wide on the second lap to avoid a rider. Spies recovered from 15th place to take eighth at the line, carving his way through the competition to do so.

Designed in 1997 as a test venue, Motegi features a somewhat geometric track layout. The surface offers good levels of grip without being overly abrasive but the number of second gear turns, linked for the most part by mini-drag strips, means braking and acceleration are the main prerequisite to a fast lap time. As part of Yamaha’s 50th anniversary of Grand Prix racing the team will again run the special ‘YZR-M1 WGP50th Anniversary Edition’ livery this weekend.

Jorge Lorenzo:
“Japan is a home race for Yamaha and for us it is always a pleasure to ride here. Motegi is a track where I have won before and last year I had a nice fight for the podium. I would like to win again here, so that is my aim this weekend. After all the confusion with Fukushima we are here, fit and ready to put on a good show for Yamaha in this special year for them. We will begin on Friday and try to do everything really well!”

Ben Spies:
“I really enjoyed the race here last year once I got over the frustration of losing so many places in the opening laps. I managed to overtake quite a few riders on my way back up to eighth which always makes the race more exciting. I hope to be higher this year from the start so won’t have to do so much catching up! We’re racing in the red and white livery again which always seems to bring me luck!”

Repsol Honda Team heads home for Japanese Grand Prix

This weekend, the Japanese Grand Prix will mark, as it did in 2010, the beginning of the final chapter of the MotoGP World Championship, which then stops in Australia and Malaysia before the final round in Valencia.

The Motegi circuit will welcome the travelling family of the World Championship with Casey Stoner leading the standings 44 points ahead of Jorge Lorenzo. Repsol Honda team mate Andrea Dovizioso lies in third place with Dani Pedrosa just 15 points behind him in fourth.

Casey Stoner has achieved 8 wins and 13 podiums in 14 races upon his return to the track where he won last season, now wearing Honda colours at their home Grand Prix.

Dani Pedrosa, despite physical problems, has two wins this season and a total of eight podium finishes in eleven races. Pedrosa has visited the podium in Motegi five times in his career.

Motegi is also a venue where Dovizioso will aim to shine again, last year he achieved his first ever MotoGP pole position and took second place on the podium after one of his best races in the premier class.
HRC will present a fantastic line up in Motegi hoping to bring courage and support for the East Japan area. In addition to the riders participating in every Championship round (Dani Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso and Casey Stoner for Repsol Honda Team; Marco Simoncelli and Hiroshi Aoyama for Gresini Team, and Toni Elías for LCR Team), HRC test riders Shinishi Ito and Kousuke Akiyoshi will also race in Motegi. Ito will be a wild card entry in a HRC Team while Akiyoshi will ride alongside Elías for LCR.

Casey Stoner:
"Motegi is quite a different circuit, it's similar in a way to Le Mans and is very stop-start, a little like a go kart track, but in general it's more fun than some of the other circuits we visit. It has a lot of hard breaking, a lot of hard accelerating, it's pretty tough on the body and physically demanding. If you miss your breaking points it's easy to run wide so it will be important to get the set up on the bike just right. As in Aragon, we will be going out there trying to win. We had a fantastic race here last year, probably one of my best and it will be fun to go there on the Honda and see how the bike works around the circuit".

Andrea Dovizioso:
"We go to Japan focused on returning to the podium, this has to be our target. We will arrive at the Japanese GP this year in the same position we were last year - straight from a crash and zero points, but I’m determined to transform this disappointment with extra motivation. Last season we had a great race and we almost won, so I’m confident to repeat a great performance at Motegi, a circuit that I like and where I have been on the podium in all the three classes. Regarding the characteristics of the track, the Twin Ring Motegi has a lot of acceleration zones so it suits the RC212V well, allowing us to use all the strong points of our machine.

Dani Pedrosa:
"Motegi is one of my favourite circuits not only for the layout but also for the atmosphere; I always ride well there and feel a lot of support from the Japanese fans and I think this year will be even more special for them. Obviously, last year I had a hard time there due to my injury, but I want to focus on my riding and enjoy the GP. I go there with the same approach as the last races: trying to do our best in all the sessions. I have won at this track in 125 and 250, but not yet in MotoGP, so that's a big motivation for me. I enjoy racing in Motegi and together with my team will do our best to perform well".

Valentino Rossi to test deltabox aluminium frame

Valentino Rossi will test a conventional deltabox aluminium chassis on Ducati’s factory GP12 machine in Jerez later this week after the Italian’s woeful 2011 continued at the Motorland Aragon.

The new frame is similar to the concept used by Ducati’s Japanese rivals and it is the latest in a long line of radical changes introduced to give Rossi a bike he can fight for victories on.

The new twin spar chassis was designed in Bologna and fabricated in the UK by frame experts FTR.

The 32-year-old has tried three major re-designed concepts in 2011 with little success, including a new flexible carbon fibre frame after the Estoril round.

He then rode a GP11.1 Desmosedici featuring new seamless shift gearbox, swingarm and rear suspension system from Assen onwards.

And at the Motorland Aragon race last weekend he rode with an aluminium frame, but not a full delatbox version like the one he will use on Friday.

The nine-times world champion continues to be handicapped by a chronic understeer issue and vague front-end feeling with this year’s Desmosedici.

New 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 gets traction control

This is the new 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 which has six-stage traction control and a mid-life redesign. Images have leaked a few hours before Yamaha’s official announcement later today and MCN will bring full details later on this afternoon.

The R1 is still instantly recognisable; Yamaha is holding back on a radical redesign for at least another two years according to company insiders. The biggest change for 2012 is the new six-way adjustable traction control system (TCS) which will come as standard. Much of the rest of the bike is unchanged – the innovative 998cc crossplane crankshaft inline four-cylinder engine with an uneven firing order and underseat pipes remain.

Other changes to the R1 include:

Revised front lights and lower fairing
Remapped ECU for smoother power delivery and a boost to low and mid-range power
New LED front lights
Newly shaped exhaust heatshield and end caps
MotoGP inspired top yoke

The traction control works by using front and rear wheel speed sensors which detect the rear wheel spinning and then adjusts the fuel injection, throttle opening and ignition timing to reduce power. The current three-way Variable Map Function stays.

The Aragon weekend was particularly challenging for the Ducati Team and its riders, who are working to speed up the development of the Desmosedici.

On one hand, the choice to use a seventh engine for Valentino Rossi enables his team to have two identical motorcycles available to work on during the last races of the season, but on the other hand, he was obliged to start from pit lane today, ten seconds after the race start. That didn’t prevent the Italian from stubbornly climbing to ninth place, even if a worn rear tyre prompted him to subsequently lose a position to Cal Crutchlow.

Nicky Hayden started very well from the third row and finished in seventh place after a nice battle with Hector Barbera that lasted until the final corner.

“I had a good start and was decent at the very beginning. We knew tyre wear was going to be an issue, and we had a drop in performance after the first couple of laps. It lost grip, and I also wasn’t able to load the bike well for turning. I was okay in parts of the track, but compared to the fast guys, I was losing time in the last corner. I hoped to hang onto the second group for a while, but it just wasn’t possible. I’d like to have fought with Bautista on the last lap because he was on our pace, but Barbera and I were going back and forth, which hurt both of us and let him escape. It’s unfortunate, because coming here we hoped that we could put up a better fight. Still, this is the first race I’ve finished normally with the GP11.1, since at Indy I reentered just to get points. Hopefully that will help us to get some data and be better off in the future.”

“It was definitely a difficult race, even if objectively speaking, we could have done a little better than we did. We used the setup from yesterday morning, with which I had done some good laps with a very used tyre. Unfortunately, in the race the rear tyre was sliding much more than it did in practice. It was almost used up just when I was catching Nicky and his group. That said, we’re still not where we should be. We’re working on several fronts, with short-term solutions that haven’t been conclusive, and others that are longer-term and that I still hope can bring more substantial improvements. We’ll see what they think at the factory. For now, we’re still pretty far, and given that time is our biggest enemy, we’ll continue also working on development during the races.”

The Italian was amongst the subjects discussed by the Repsol Honda rider in his latest blog, in which he named Jorge Lorenzo as the rival to beat.

After the opening official MotoGP Test of the year in Malaysia gave some very early pre-season indications, Dani Pedrosa discussed his impressions of how 2011 is shaping up in his latest Repsol blog.
“Ours is a strong team, with Stoner and Dovizioso. There are also riders who’ve been very good in the first Test, such as Simoncelli and Aoyama. Anybody can give you a surprise,” said the Repsol Honda rider.
“Right now the Honda RC212V seems to be functioning well. We’ll see what happens when we get to the first GP of the year, because everything could change there. You never know, but at the moment everything points towards a tough World Championship. The Yamaha continues to have a good rhythm lap upon lap. Lorenzo, as the defending Champion, is a rival to beat, and Spies had a great season in 2010 and will certainly be better this year.”
Valentino Rossi’s position of 11th overall on the timesheet was deceptive said Pedrosa, who added: “The great unknown quantity will perhaps be Rossi. It’s his first year with Ducati and in Malaysia he wasn’t amongst the fastest riders. But Rossi is Rossi, and you can never rely on anything. Even when he’s in last place on the Saturday he still has the capacity to surprise.”
The second Test of the pre-season, also at Sepang, takes place from February 22nd-24th.

A triumphant 2010 MotoGP racing season witnessed Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider Jorge Lorenzo charge to World Championship victory with an incredible nine race wins and a record breaking 383 championship points earned.

The status of reigning MotoGP World Champion gives the young Mallorcan rider the unique opportunity to change his racing number to No 1 as he defends his title this season. Lorenzo today confirmed his intention to run the coveted No 1 on his Yamaha Factory Racing M1 race bike, revealing a clever design incorporating his JL initials. This will be the first time a Yamaha MotoGP rider has worn the No 1 since Wayne Rainey defended his World Championship title in 1993 for the third consecutive time.

"Today I can reveal my No 1," said Jorge Lorenzo. "I am very proud because you have to work very hard to have the option to wear it. I have been lucky with my design because the No 1 works really well with my JL initials, maybe with different letters it would have been difficult to make it look right, I hope my fans will like it! I won't forget my No 99 this season, it will be there somewhere on my leathers because No 99 is in my heart. It was a difficult choice to change my number but I have earned the right for this unique opportunity to wear it."

Valentino Rossi’s inauguration as an official Ducati rider took a further step at Madonna di Campiglio on Wednesday, when along with team-mate Nicky Hayden he was on hand to unveil the Desmosedici GP11 that both with ride in the 2011 MotoGP World Championship.

Complete in the individualised fairings that each rider will display this season, Rossi’s machine – personalised by Aldo Drudi – had hints of the Italian’s famous yellow, as the prototype was revealed for the first time.

The man behind the design of the GP11, Filippo Preziosi, was present at a press conference to describe the major characteristics of the machine as he detailed the features that include new aerodynamics, changes to engine torque, the stiffness of the chassis and revised electronics. “The aerodynamics are completely different, and the features are those we tested at Valencia (in November) upon which we will base the evolution of the bike,” said Preziosi, who also spoke to motogp.com after the press conference to explain the main changes to the prototype.

Also in attendance was Ducati General Manager Claudio Domenicali, who said: “2011 will be a year of great change. It will be the start of the third phase of our presence in MotoGP, a historic moment. To have Valentino in the team is a new aspect. Everybody knows what Valentino is capable of in terms of giving feedback for improving the bike and furthering the capacity of our project.”

In less than one month’s time the first Official MotoGP Test of the year takes place at Sepang as the fight for the final 800cc title gets underway. Here, motogp.com previews the forthcoming season.

The 2010 campaign is still fresh in the memory but already the focus has turned to 2011. With the first Official Test in preparation for the new season coming immediately after the final round of the year in Valencia back in November, the excitement at the final 800cc season before the introduction of a 1000c engine capacity limit in 2012 is merely adding to the anticipation that the 2011 season will be one to savour.

Looking at the leading contenders for the 2011 MotoGP title the defending World Champion Jorge Lorenzo will be at the forefront, as he aims to underline his status as the new dominant force. Having been so consistent in 2010 and finishing 16 of the 18 rounds on the podium on his M1, the factory Yamaha rider displayed a level of maturity that was vastly improved in comparison to his previous premier class campaigns.

As Lorenzo opts for continuity with Yamaha two of his chief rivals ride with new teams in 2011. Casey Stoner becomes a factory HRC rider and his display in the Valencia Test hinted at what was an immediate affinity with the RC212V, whilst Valentino Rossi has filled the Australian’s seat at Ducati as an all-Italian match-up adds to the fascinating grid. Rossi may not have enjoyed as comfortable an introduction to his new machine as Stoner did to the Honda, but such is the nine-time World Champion’s proven track record he can be expected to be pushing hard on the Desmosedici come March 20th at Losail.

Along with Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa will hope to benefit from the stability of remaining with the same set-up in 2011, and for the 2010 runner-up it will be his sixth season on the factory Honda team. Having been Lorenzo’s longest challenger until injury struck towards the end of 2010, Pedrosa’s sights will be firmly set on a first premier class title.

As much as the ‘top four’ continue to be spoken of in one bracket, the gap behind them is being closed all the time and there are a number of riders who will not only be confident of breaking into that elite, but who have proven they have the ability to run at the front.

Andrea Dovizioso enjoyed his best premier class season to date in 2010 and will remain on the factory Honda team, Ben Spies was Rookie of the Year and earned a factory Yamaha ride as well as serving notice of his talent in what was his debut year, and of course Nicky Hayden is a former World Champion who displayed a much-improved feeling on the Desmosedici in his second season with Ducati. Marco Simoncelli was also highly impressive in his first campaign in the MotoGP class, and in 2011 will ride a factory supported RC212V on the San Carlo Honda Gresini team.

Colin Edwards has a wealth of MotoGP experience and will continue with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team, whilst Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet are both seasoned campaigners and will compete to adjust quickest to the Desmosedici of the Pramac Racing team. Returning for their second seasons respectively and eager to make progress will be Héctor Barberá (Paginas Amarillas Aspar), Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) and Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini).

Great interest will also be stoked by the introduction of three new riders to the category. Toni Elías, winner of the inaugural Moto2 World Championship, makes his return to the premier class with LCR Honda whilst rookies Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Karel Abraham (Cardion ab Motoracing) make the move from superbikes and Moto2 respectively.

Rossi: “The Ducati is a proper prototype”

The Italian spoke for the first time as an official Ducati rider on Tuesday, discussing his views on the Desmosedici, his recovering shoulder and the forthcoming MotoGP season.

Valentino Rossi spoke for the first time as a Ducati rider at the Wrooom 2011 event at Madonna di Campiglio on Tuesday, satisfying the demands of both media and fans as he discussed the Desmosedici.
Sporting Ducati’s red colours Rossi also talked to motogp.com, and started by joking: “I feel quite strange speaking in red! We were always big enemies with Ducati, so I need time to feel normal in this shirt!”
In an earlier press conference Rossi described the Ducati as “a proper prototype”, with a “different concept from the Japanese factories”, and a similarly pressing subject was that of his recovering shoulder.
“The problem was that the surgery was a lot heavier than expected because the damage was very big. The doctor said it wouldn’t be a problem to recover 100%, but that I’d need more time. From that moment I have worked hard. I expect to be fitter, but we have to put in 100% to be at the minimum level to ride for Sepang test,” explained Rossi to motogp.com in the attached video interview.
Following his first Test on the Desmosedici in Valencia last November, Rossi had surgery on his shoulder and said: “The big problem in Valencia was me. I had a lot of pain in the shoulder and not enough power. This is a different bike and you have to ride it more aggressively. This is my work at Ducati, to improve it and make it an easier bike and have fewer risks in all the races. Stoner was unbelievable in some races last year but made some mistakes too and ended the Championship in fourth. So far we have been working on easier things such as rider position, handlebars, foot pegs for Sepang, and there we will start to work on improving the bike.”
The all-Italian partnership between the nine-times World Champion and the Borgo Panigale factory is one which has added to the excitement, and Rossi is well aware of the expectations.
“I will definitely have extra pressure with Ducati compared to the past, because a lot of fans around the world are curious about my performance with Ducati. We have to manage this and it will be very hard work – maybe we won’t be ready to win in the first races so I hope the fans will give us enough time.”
The 2011 campaign, in which Rossi said he sees Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner as “favourites” for the title, will also reunite him with former team-mate Nicky Hayden, something the 31 year-old is looking forward to. “I have always had a good relationship with Nicky since 2003 when we were team-mates with Honda,” he said. “I’m very happy to work with him. He’s a great guy and has experience on the Desmosedici, so maybe he will help us in the beginning. It will be completely open with no wall in the box.”
And finally, when asked when he expects to be in full flight on the GP11, Rossi added: “I hope when the summer starts.”

Valentino Rossi makes his first outing with Ducati

After a lengthy wait on Tuesday morning due to a wet track Valentino Rossi finally gave the masses of awaiting media at Valencia the moment they, and MotoGP fans, had been eagerly anticipating.
Just after 12.20pm local time the 31 year-old took to the Ricardo Tormo track on board the Ducati Desmosedici, with a new fairing – completely black – and donned in plain black leathers, with his trademark 46 emblazoned in luminous yellow on his back.
The main focus of the two-day Test for the Ducati Team is the decision on whether to go with the screamer or big bang engine on the GP11, as discussed by Filippo Preziosi in this interview.
Ducati Test rider Franco Battaini first warmed both versions of the bike up prior to Rossi’s exit from Pit Lane, after which the rider completed a first run of no more than eight laps to gain an initial feeling with the bike. Rossi then re-emerged just before 1.10pm as he began a second stint.
The opening day of the Test is scheduled to finish at 5pm local time today, with highlights to follow on motogp.com!

In a season already marked down as a huge success for MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo, the Spaniard’s seven poles and 17 front-row grid starts contributed to his 380 points which made him the best qualifier for 2010.

In Valencia the BMW M Award winner was presented with his reward, a brand new BMW M3 Coupé, following his final qualification of the season – second on the grid for Sunday’s season finale the GP Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana.

"It's great to win this amazing car. It looks so good I can't wait to drive it back home, but I'm not a crazy guy on the open road. I leave my maximum speed to the race track." said Lorenzo upon receiving the car.

Just 36 hours after the end of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship ends riders and teams will be back in action at the Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana for the first official off-season test, which will also be their final outing of the year.

This two-day test, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, will give MotoGP fans a chance to get a first glimpse of the 2011 MotoGP grid, with the respective debuts of Casey Stoner with Honda, Cal Crutchlow with Yamaha and Toni Elías with LCR Honda and also Valentino Rossi making an historic switch to Ducati after racing under Yamaha colours for the past seven years.

Following their nail-biting fight for third position in the Grand Prix of Japan the Championship leader was dissatisfied with the manner in which his Fiat Yamaha team-mate secured the final podium spot.

Fourth position at Motegi has done little to dent Jorge Lorenzo's hopes of securing the 2010 MotoGP World Championship but the Spaniard was left extremely unhappy with the manner in which he missed out on a podium finish to team-mate and current World Champion Valentino Rossi.

Their Japanese battle began at the first turn of the opening lap and as the two remained in close contact throughout the race the fight for third really heated up towards the end of the 24-lap contest, with daring moves and touching fairings the highlights in a tense battle that engrossed everyone watching on. Rossi managed to edge the result and whilst Lorenzo was understandably disappointed at finishing off the podium for only the second time this season, it was the nature in which he did so that left him with a bitter taste in his mouth.

"The show is great for the people to enjoy and the business of motorcycle racing, it's fantastic, but when you are a rider who is on a MotoGP bike which gets up to 300 km/h in the straight and 180-200 km/h in the corners and you are feeling the other rider touch you it's not a great feeling or a good emotion because you know you are putting your life at risk," said Lorenzo in the attached video interview. "The three or four moves I made on Valentino I felt were correct and fair. On the other hand his moves were legal but on the limit, from my point of view. We have seen the way he likes to fight, it happened before with Gibernau, then with Stoner, and now with me. Maybe in the future his rivals will get a little bit mad and we will act like he usually does!"

Lorenzo added: "We are team-mates, I am fighting for the Riders' Championship but we are both fighting for the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championship as well and we have to remember this. I am disappointed to miss the podium of course because I wanted one at Yamaha's home, but this is racing."

The decision to go with the medium front Bridgestone tyre as opposed to the hard option that his rivals opted for was a key factor in his race as well said Lorenzo. "It was obvious after the race that our choice was not the best but we can't change the situation. We made a mistake with the front tyre and I didn't have so much confidence in the front so for this reason it was difficult to overtake Valentino. We also chose the old engine because with the new one we would waste a lot of fuel and would not finish the race."

Lorenzo remains on the verge of sealing his first premier class title and leads the standings by 69 points ahead of injured rival Dani Pedrosa heading into Round 15 of 18 at Sepang next weekend.
